Hangt er vanaf waar je hem voor wilt gaan gebruiken en hoe snel je hem nodig hebt;

Wil je hem gaan gebruiken voor de Appstore, muziek, films en internet zou ik het zeker doen, heb zelf een iPod touch first generation gehad en heb inmiddels anderhalf jaar een iPhone 3GS.

Mocht je wat geduld hebben zou ik even wachten tot September/Oktober aangezien dan vaak nieuwe iPods (touches) aangekondigd en uitgebracht worden.

Apple issues App Store stats: 425,000 apps, 15B downloads, $3.6B revenue

Apple this morning announced that its venerable App Store has hit fifteen billion downloads, matching the number of song downloads on the iTunes Store as of last month. The company re-iterated that it has paid developers over $2.5 billion cumulatively since the App Stores inception. This is after Apples standard 30 percent cut, meaning total App Store revenue before the break-down is almost $3.6 billion in aggregate.

Apple also said it sold over two hundred million iOS devices (iPhones, iPod touches and iPads). Unfortunately, the company wouldnt say how many of those are devices in active use. The number of apps on the App Store has swelled to 425,000 items, of which a hundred thousand are native iPad apps but we already figured out the iPad App Store. The App Store now operates in ninety countries worldwide, Apple notes. The company quoted its marketing honcho in a statement:

In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen. Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users for surpassing 15 billion downloads.

Apple in May actually approved 500,000 apps in total, but the store contains less apps because of withdrawals, replacements and so forth. Google confirmed at their developer conference in May that Android Market is approaching the 200,000 apps mark, having topped four and a half billion downloads since the store launched on October 22, 2008. Nog een tweede nieuwsbericht dat wellicht interressanter is.

There will be two different iPhones in September and the cheaper one is more important

This afternoon, we got some Intel from an iPhone source that has been reliable in the past.  Most of the information is already known but it is important to weigh in on what’s going around.  The “big” news is that Apple will be selling two totally distinct iPhones in September.  One will be a low-end variety that will address the cheap Android market, according to the source.  The other will be a high-end device and will be an all new design.  There will be no mistaking these two devices, they will be immediately discernable.  The iPod touch, like it always has, will get updated in September as well.

So that’s where the info path trails off, and to be frank, it isn’t all that surprising.  There are currently two totally distinct iPhones on the market: the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4.  The 3GS is at a cheaper price point while the iPhone 4 is the high-end line.

So we’ll have the same thing in September?  iPhone 4 is the low end and iPhone 5 the high end?

I’m not so sure.  For one, the price of an iPhone 4 isn’t going to compete with cheap Android phones in any way.  Apple is currently selling them for over $600.  They aren’t going to cut the price in half overnight.  The 3GS doesn’t currently compete on price either.  I think that to compete on price with Android, Apple has to make a totally new low end phone as well.

What’s it going to be?  I think a good place to start looking is the curent iPod touch.  The iPod touch has the same resolution screen as the iPhone 4 but with poor(er) viewing angles because the screen doesn’t have In-Plane Switching.

Also, the back camera is an order of magnitude worse than the iPhone 4′s, it doesn’t have GPS, has less RAM and the battery doesn’t last quite as long.

…and obviously the iPod lacks the “phone” bits.

But Apple somehow makes a lot of money selling this “almost iPhone” for just $229 retail (and under $200 at discounts) vs. the $650 that the iPhone 4 fetches without a plan.  It doesn’t seem infeasible to me that Apple could use the iPod touch platform that debuted a full year ago to build a cheap iPhone device.

Here’s how:

Start with the same hardware.  Add the GPS/3G baseband chips and some phone wiring and a solid 3 megapixel camera and you are 99% of the way to an iPhone lite.  iPhone Air?  Whatever.

Apple could make this device, one that is thinner than an iPhone 4, with most of the same specs, for $299.  But here’s the best part:

This iPhone could be a world phone that works on all four (10?) US networks and abroad.  Apple already has Qualcomm Gobi chips in its Verizon iPhone and iPad.

I think Apple changes how it positions this device. It just sells this iPhone like it sells iPods in Apple Stores, at Amazon, in kiosks at Airports.  Let the carriers all compete on price and quality of service like case manufacturers do.  It works on AT&T but if they aren’t treating you right, you can go hook up with Verizon or Sprint.  Apple has been working on reprogrammable SIMs for some time but could just go in a low-tech direction as well.  If the carriers want the most popular iPhone ever, they play ball and they compete hard for customers.  Prices drop, options open up for consumers.  More people join the Apple ecosystem.

Most importantly, it would work on prepaid networks like Sprint’s Virgin, which charge $25/month for unlimited data.  Heck, maybe you don’t even need a voice plan.  Just 3G data and a VoIP app or two (Facetime?)

Sure, carriers could buy these things up, subsidize them and give them away free.  But monthly subsidies add up quickly.  I think a lot of US customers are sick of 2-year plans. A $300 iPhone could smash the hold that carriers have on US customers.

More than that, it could put Apple back in the driver’s seat.  Apple’s iPod didn’t grab most of the market until Apple made some concessions: It made iPod Windows PC-compatible with a USB cord instead of Firewire.  Suddenly everyone could own one.  After that, the iPod’s popularity soared and Apple owned the market.

This could be iPhone’s “iPod moment”.

Apple COO Tim Cook said as much in a recent discussion with analysts.

We don’t want iPhone to just be for the rich.

It also helps to consider that Apple makes a lot of money after the original iPhone purchase.  Music, ringtones, apps, books, movies, TV shows, and now iCloud are all part of joining the Apple ecosystem.  With an iPhone that is able to move from carrier to carrier, Apple could conceivably take some cash off the top there too.  The point is, Apple could make so much more than it does currently with a mass market device.

All of your friends may have an iPhone but only 8% of Americans have ponied up for one.  Apple could quadruple its market with a move like this.

And, if Apple can build an iPhone for under $300, you almost have to wonder why they still need the iPod touch.  More on that soon.

[A]bart, ik had gelezen dat er dit jaar geen nieuwe iPod touch zou verschijnen. Maar het klinkt een beetje als of de Iphone light beter is als de iPod touch. En hij is goedkoper, althans volgens de geruchten. Dus.. nog wachten op de iphone. Of gewoon de touch kopen aangezien ik mn HTC heb.

Edit, prepaid iphone? Of gaat m dat niet worden? Ook lees ik in jouw stukje dat er wel een iPod touch komt. Ik wacht denk ik wel even. Als je een iphone nieuw tweedehands koopt dan kan t toch wel prepaid?

Ik vind het moeilijk om op dit moment wel of niet aan te bevelen een iPhone of iPod touch te kopen door de onzekerheid van het wel dan niet aankondigen van een nieuw apparaat. Sorry dat ik niet kan helpen, had het graag anders gezien maar ik wil echt geen verkeerde aanbevelingen doen, das natuurlijk zonde van het geld.

Als advies voor jou zou ik gewoon de geruchten over mogelijke releases zo nauw mogelijk in de gaten houden want meestal zitten er wel (soms hele kleine) kernen van waarheid in.

Apple heeft de Amerikaanse International Trade Commission verzocht om de import van HTC-toestellen in de Verenigde Staten te blokkeren. De fabrikant van de iPhone claimde eerder al dat HTC diverse patenten van het bedrijf schendt.

Als Apple zijn zin krijgt, kunnen verscheidene HTC-toestellen niet langer verkocht worden in de Verenigde Staten, zo meldt Bloomberg. De basis hiervoor is een nieuwe aanklacht van Apple, die bij de ITC is neergelegd. Deze Amerikaanse organisatie kan een importverbod opleggen, maar het gebeurt niet vaak dat de ITC deze maatregel daadwerkelijk uitspreekt. Details van de aanklacht ontbreken vooralsnog.

Het is niet de eerste aanklacht die Apple indient tegen HTC. Eerder claimde het bedrijf uit Cupertino al dat HTC inbreuk maakte op twintig patenten. De Taiwanese smartphonefabrikant ontkende patenten te schenden en klaagde op zijn beurt Apple aan wegens schending van vijf patenten. HTC is vooralsnog niet schuldig bevonden, waardoor Apple het waarschijnlijk bij de ITC met een nieuwe aanklacht nogmaals wil proberen. Op 5 augustus velt de commissie een oordeel over het patentdispuut tussen Apple en HTC.

Apple klaagde onlangs ook Samsung aan, omdat verscheidene mobiele apparaten, waaronder de Galaxy S en Galaxy S II, kopieën van de iPhone op het gebied van design, software en verpakking zouden zijn. Daarbij werd de ITC gevraagd om een importverbod van Samsung-toestellen.

Ik heb een iPod touch 4g, maar nadat ik mn HTC Sensation heb gebruik ik die iPod totaal niet meer. Ik doe gewoon alles met mijn HTC, is veel handiger om 1 device mee te nemen, dus hou daar ook rekening mee!

Bedankt voor de reacties! Ik wacht gewoon tot september en dan weet ik meer van hoe en wat. Ik heb zo'n 400€ voor een telefoon met 32gb, goede camera, en een goede muziekspeler. Maar ik kan wel gaan kijken maar dan zijn er toch weer allemaal nieuwe devices waaronder iphone lite.

Dat is inderdaad de slimste oplossing! Gewoon even geduld hebben, maar dat is voor mij vaak de moeilijkste optie omdat ik snel iets wil haha. Maar ik zou even kijken wat het is, en is het niks dan zou ik als ik jou was een leuke phone kopen!

Dus, iOS 5 is vrijgegeven!

Zodra de tethered jailbreak vrijgegeven wordt ga ik meteen upgraden en jailbreaken.

Untethered jailbreak zal nog wel een paar weekjes duren, ik citeer:

Ik bun nu iOS 5 aan het installen alleen reservekopie maken duurt echt heel lang...

Ik hoef nu nog geen jailbreak, hoop wel dat er zo snel een JB komt, want ik gebruik alleen ipod nog voor wordfeud en eBuddy en internet en wat andere LEGALE apps

Maar hoe sneller een jailbreak hoe beter

Tethered jailbreak is mogelijk met de GM jailbreak voor iOS 5.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b3 is hiervoor mogelijk, let op; dit is wel tethered, dus altijd booten met redsn0w.

Maar bij cydia staat soms dat je moet herstarten dus dan moet je iDevice ook steeds aan de pc liggen?

EDIT2: iOS5 doet het niet super bij mij... App store, installous en instellingen sluiten bij mij zomaar af...

Nee, je moet met de jailbreak gewoon Redsn0w naar je 5.0 final release ISPW wijzen, dit is dezelfde als de iOS 5 GM.

En ik denk dat je dan maar beter even je ipod kunt gaan herstellen en de jailbreak opnieuw moet uitvoeren, bij mij werkt alles namelijk wel soepel.

Wanneer Cydia zegt dat je moet rebooten; apparaat uitschakelen, booten via Redsn0w. En klaar

Vergeten jullie alsjeblieft de VPN verbinding niet? Je internet provider zoals Ziggo of KPN kan door gebruik van de VPN niet zien wat er gebeurd op je internet verbinding en ben je volledig anoniem voor iedereen. Een vereiste tegenwoordig....
